Film Posters - Dani

Wild Bill
Trailer -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo5IaRnKyFk

Narrative

  • We can tell the main character by looking at the poster as he is situated in the middle of the frame and closer than the other characters in the background.
  • He comes across as being quite a rough male character as his appearance seems dirty and he has cuts over his face indicating he may be involved in violence.
  • The characters in the background range from a man and a women dressed smartly looking very formal compared to four young men all wearing big jackets and either wearing a hat or their hood up. This indicates to the audience it may be the main characters gang or friends he is involved with and are key parts of the film. However, the characters dressed more formally may be the people that are after them as they seem like opposites.
  • The theme that is communicated with the audience is that the film is associated with British criminals and working class  people as the main character does not seem to have alot of money as his clothes look dirty and his face looks all beaten and brusied. And by the look of his fists we can see that he is involved in alot of violence.

Representation

  • The poster is representing working class men who may have been involved in crime and just been released from prison. The ages of the characters range from young teenagers to middle aged adults showing that this film may be about the family of the criminal and how it effects families as well as the society in modern day life.
  • The more formally dressed man and women are looking at the main character or at the other characters in a bad way this shows that they could be after them for something they may have done. The other characters are looking towards the audience where the main man is looking this indicates that they are part of him and involved with him.
  • By just looking at the poster we can only see an outline of places in London representing that this film is set in the back streets of London, this shows to the audience how rough the boys are. The main colours used are black and yellow. The yellow is darkened which represents dirt and unpleasantness and the black may represent death or depression. Also, i have noticed that two characters in the background are dressed smartly in black which portrays one of class elegance and wealth. Classy clothing is designed in black such as the mans suit and the females smart top, this shows they are higher up than the other characters.

Genre

  • This film comes across as being a drama film as it is about Bill when he comes out of prison and what he has to face with. It is about him and his sons as they have been abounded by their mother and he has no choice but to look after them. This is also showed in the star reviews 'Outstanding' or 'A Hugely Enjoyable and Impressive Debut'.
  • It is very interesting the way the films title is on Bill's knuckles looking like a tattoo saying 'Wild Bill'. Tattoos are permanent markings on the body which portrays that Bill will always be wild and uncontrollable. Also, they are seen to make a person look unattractive and dirty and limit a persons opportunities in life because of their negative connotations and associations. 40% of companies will not hire a person with tattoos therefore already the poster shows that this film represents crime and violence on the streets with people such as bill being unemployed and creating drama.
  • Violence and crime are probably key aspects of this film because the poster is nitty and gritty and there are fists shown up closest to the poster expressing that he is going to hit someone. Also, we can see flat blocks in the background in London and we know that crime often happens on flat blocks especially in the capital of the UK where there is alot of gangs.

Audience

  • The audience of this film would aim towards young adults and the older generation because the films certificate is 15 therefore their would be content which involves bad language and violence. I feel that mainly men would watch this film because the characters are mainly male as well as the themes and issues that are tackled in this film. However, there are some female characters therefore some females would be interested in watching this film and interested in the themes shown in the poster.
  • This film aims towards working and middle class people because it is located in the crime areas in back streets of London. Upper class people would not really be interested in watching this as they could not relate themselves to the situation.

Film Language

  • Facial expressions play a vital part in this poster as not one of the characters comes across as being in a happy mood. They all seem very serious portraying that this film is not to do with comedy but with serious issues to do with London crime.
  • The mise en scene of this poster, especially the way in which the characters are positioned with his fists being bigger than anything else, creates a sense that he is more powerful than them and is in control. It is as if he is the one that causes the most mischief.
  • The way in which the star reviews and the names of the actors are all positioned very accordingly and look very neat and bold to make sure that they stand out from the yellow background. They are also all in capital letters this makes the words seem as if they are being outspoken and like the characters are 'too much'.
  • There is a mid-shot of all of the characters in the background so we can see what they are wearing. This shows to us exactly what type of people they are, their attitude to the way they live and representations of that type of class in England.

Now is Good
Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TEXZacgWoo

Narrative

  • With this poster we can immediately tell who the main two characters will be in the film as they almost take up the entire frame and just by looking at the poster we can tell that they are very connected to each other. However, the audience can see the movie will be mainly based on the girl as she is looking towards us, creating more attention towards her. It is although he is protecting her.
  • The background is of the sky, portraying that they are in heaven or in a very happy place. Or it may be that someone is passing away.
  • 'Live every moment, love every minute  is the tag line, this instantly gets us thinking that the female is ill as we say this when someone passes away. We realise how short life is and that we should all live life to the full and make the most of it. In the film we realise that the girl has leukaemia and has given up her treatment.

Representation

  • The representation of gender and sexuality are shown in this poster. The characters are obviously in a relationship as they are within close proximity and are wearing similar colour clothing in order to relate themselves to each other.
  • Also, they both seem as if they are feeling down especially the male as he is looking downwards as if he is sad that she has an illness. He is also wearing a darker coloured top. However, the female is looking upwards towards us representing that although she has a deathly illness she is still strong.
  • In the title the word ' Now' is a different colour to the rest of the words which tries to emphasis that she has not got much time as it could be 'later is good'. It ensures that the reader of this poster looks more at this word and understands that maybe her illness is killing her and that she wants to do as many things as she can in the rest of her life.
  • The background of this poster is of a blue clear sky with some white clouds and it looks just like you would of heaven. It gives a more clearer representation as when someone dies they go to heaven, it is known to be a very calm place. Also, they are blocking the sun light behind them but it seems as if there is more light shining on her highlighting to us that this film is based around her.

Genre

  • I would say the genre of this film is romance and drama as it is about a real life situation involving love. However, the plot is that she is dying from the disease and wants to live ever moment of her life to the full that she has left.
  • The actors names are in yellow and so is her cardigan. Yellow is associated with joy, happiness intellect and energy. This may represent her character and what her personality is like while she is suffering from leukaemia.
  • I feel all classes from working class to upper class would enjoy this film as it can touch anyone. Suffering from an illness such as leukaemia is very sad and can have an impact on anyone's life no matter how much money they have. Also, people who appreciate romance films which is mostly female like to watch people in a good relationship (as shown in poster) to get an idea on what they want to have in the future and get enjoyment out of seeing someone in love.
Audience

  • I feel the main target audience is teenage and young adult girls as it would be very emotional and is based around love and affection which normally only females like to watch. The certificate is a 12A therefore any girl as long as they go with an adult if under 12 are able to watch the film.
  • However, the film could relate to both genders if they have been put in a situation with someone who has leukaemia or if they have lost someone due to the illness or even if they have been diagnosed themselves.
  • It is based on a book called 'Before I Die' by Jenny Downham which is a young adult novel therefore, any young adults or anyone else that has read the book will be more than likely to watch the film.

Film Language

  • The colours of the fonts and the characters clothes are very similar contrasting from a range of blue, yellow and white. This overall makes the poster look connected as a whole and make the poster pleasant to look at. They are soft, not harsh colours symbolising that the film story is very touching and emotional.
  • In terms of positioning, the characters are taken in a medium/close up shot as we can clearly see their facial expressions, they both look very sincere and serious. Also, we can see a small part of their clothing aswell as the background as they are roughly similar colours which indicates they all have something to do with each other.
  • Overall, this poster is very eye-catching as we can fully see the characters and it attracts its target audience by the use of soft, easy colours and we can already tell what the movie will be about by the tagline and the way the characters are pictured.

Home Poster - Meg

This is my first attempt at making a poster. I have never used photoshop before so it's all new to me.

As we don't have a picture of Dani's house, i used one which I found on Google Images. As this is just a draft it didn't really matter, and just gives you the idea that the house is the backdrop to show the setting.
I also found the group photo of our media group, and cropped out Curtis and Dani and put them at either side of the frame. In the real poster we will use different pictures so they are wearing their right clothes, and they will have different facial expressions.
I added a few extras, such as the credit block and the Dolby Digital logo. This is to give us an idea of where they will go in the real poster and make it look more professional.
The font of the title will have to be changed because I used the most basic font I could find so that it would fit on the balcony. This was all done through photoshop, and when we come to decide the real photo, I think aspects of this one will go into the final piece.

Sightseers Poster and This is England Poster - Meg

Narrative
Narrative is very hard to convey through a poster, so it's very important for the producers to get their idea across in one bit of paper. Most of the plot is hinted at through the tagline, and for this poster, their tagline is 'KILLERS HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS CLOSE-KNIT'. This shows us that the film will have something to do with murder, and because the tagline is on top of the two characters in the poster, we can assume that the killers are the people in the poster. Also, we can see that the film maybe isn't just about murder and that it probably isn't a horror film because they use a pun, which is a form of comedy, when it says 'Close-Knit' which plays on the fact the two characters are wearing knitted jumpers which you'd expect your nan to knit for you. On top of this, there is hardly any connotations on the poster of murder and of a thriller/horror film. The film poster doesn't show include blood, red things meaning danger, weapons and the people aren't stereotypically scary.
The characters in the poster seem like the normal people that you would probably live next door to, which raises questions of why they seem so concerned and worried. These facial expressions makes intrigued to watch the film, and understand why these people are troubled.  The narrative probably depends on these two characters alone, so they take up about 85% of the poster, and are huge in comparison to other posters.

Representation
The two characters that are shown to us in the poster are most probably in a heterosexual relationship, as they are in close proximity and are wearing the same knitted clothes. They obviously share a relationship, or they probably wouldn't be placed where they are, together, on the poster.
The man is wearing a badge that says 'A happy man pulls a caravan' which isn't stereotypically manly, but shows off his character well, because he isn't your typically 'action hero hunk' This shows us that he probably is married to the woman next to him, and the badge along with the caravan in the title shows us that he obviously likes caravans. We can draw from this that they have probably gone on a camping holiday that has gone wrong.
Compared to the woman in the poster, the man has a very stern face, which shows that he is annoyed or is concerned about something in the difference. The female, looks concerned too, but more worried and vulnerable. These are traditional stereotypes for the females to be scared, and the males to be angry and in control, protecting the women. He is also slightly in front of the female, which shows us that he is more dominant in the frame, and possibly in the film. The man also has a big beard, which all adds up to his masculinity.
In the background, we can see the beautiful English countryside, which represents our country as a idyllic and picture perfect. The two characters seem to be working class, as they are holidaying in England in a caravan, which isn't typically middle class. They are also wearing unbranded clothes, which is typical of an independent British film without a lot of funding, but it also adds to the fact that maybe they can't afford clothes from top designers.

Genre
I would expect the genre of the film to be a Comedy. This is because of the star reviews in the corner which read 'Funny as Hell!' and 'Laugh-Out-Loud Funny!' The film also seems to tackle new problems which we don't normally see in Hollywood High Concept films, such as the caravan holiday which has obviously gone wrong. The mans beard can also be part of the comedy aspect, because they are now joke-starters, with 'Movember' and other similar things becoming very popular. The two characters seem to break the conventions of a ideal couple, as they are middle aged and not as good looking as other characters in other films. This adds to the comedy effect, and we seem to enjoy the film more when we can laugh at the characters by them not being conventional. The tagline also makes us laugh, so it gives us a sneak peak of what we should expect in the film, which will be plenty more jokes and comedy elements. There is also a random dog (that seems random to us) poking it's head out from behind the man, which shows he has relevance to the film, but we don't know how. The fact that it's poking through as a secondary element seems humorous in itself, and we are intrigued to see what happens with the dog.
The colour of the writing, in yellow is also unconventional in many films, which shows that maybe the film is a little taboo and breaks the norm. This shows us that it's a comedy rather than a horror, because they would have chosen red instead of the bouncy colour yellow, which connotations are sunny, fun, clowns and funny things.

Audience
The audience of the film seems to be teenagers, to older people who can sympathise with the characters. I would say the age range goes from age 15-50. The certificate is a 15, which shows that it's intended for a older audience, probably because of the humour which we can expect is in it. I put 50 as the top age for the film, just because film tastes change all the time, and is it is a 'Laugh Out Loud Funny' film then they may not appreciate the humour in which it entails.
I would say that the film would shout out to both males and females, just because the two mains characters, are male and female, which shows that there is something for everyone. The characters aren't the best looking, so it's not for people who are looking for some 'eye-candy' especially for the women.
People who like comedy, which is pretty much everyone, would probably appreciate this film, because even from the poster you can see that it's very funny.
Middle class people who are average Joe's like these people in the film are also probably targetted because they have probably been on England holidays in caravans. They'd then find this funny because it's the main focus of the film and they'd relate to it being like their holiday perhaps.

Film Language
The characters are in a medium long shot, so we see the top half of their body. This works well because we still get to see their facial expression clearly, as well as body language, and their costume. This is probably the best type of shot for a film poster, because we get to see the main aspects of how they are feeling, what they are wearing and how they are standing etc. This also fills up about 85% of the frame, and we don't have to squint to have a look and see their face and main details that the film poster maker wants us to see. The mise en scene of the poster sets an idyllic scene, where people would love to go, yet we get the impression that all is not what it seems.

2)

Narrative
The narrative to this UK independant film seems to include lots of different characters, which means your not expected by Shane Meadows to remember all the characters names, although you do connect with them throughout the film. The story is set in England, hence the title, and we see stereotypical clothing for 1983, so the mise en scene is perfect for their time in which it was set. The picture (although blurred) features the 'nitty gritty' youth of England 1983 of different age groups. This shows us that they aren't showing the best side of England that you see on postcards and on TV, and are being comical about it, because they are leaning up against a corregated fence with flat blocks behind them, looking aggressive, lazy and youthful. All the characters who are featured on the poster don't give us an idea of what the films about, but they do show us that maybe they're a gang who are on the streets of maybe London, in the peak time of England. The film is obviously well respected as on the poster it shows it won the best film award and two others, as well as reviews which say 'Deeply Impressive' and have awarded it 4 stars, and 'Best British Film of the Year' with 5 stars.

Representation
The characters look young and could be described as the 'wasted youth' as they aren't active, or doing anything, they seem to be waiting for something interesting to happen, which is true of many young people in 1983 and in modern society. By their body language, we can see that they perhaps are lazy and just hanging around instead of doing homework and helping their parents around the house. This is to show us an 'accurate' representation of England at this time. Obviously fashion has changed since it was 30 years ago, so I can't draw conclusions about them as people by their clothing as I wasn't alive in 1983. They are all from a lower class, probably underclass or working class, as they are hanging around the streets, in a poorer part of England instead of being outside. The colour desaturation reinforces this, because their life isn't bright, considering of their background and day to day life. There are so many characters that it would be hard to guess the sexuality for each of them, but in 1983 it was frowned upon by some people to be of a different ethnic group, or sexuality, so these themes and issues maybe included in the film, other than that we cannot guess this from the poster. All the characters are at the same proximity to each other, and are probably in a particular order but without seeing the film it is hard to guess this, though some couples are probably evident by their space in the line up.

Genre
I think the genres of the film are obviously Urban UK Independant, with aspects of comedy, violence/crime and perhaps thriller. It's hard to see a genre through a poster, though it is clear from the colour of the piece that it's UK Urban. This is shown to us also through the setting, on a flat estate in the background. However, the other genres can be applied, and are shown to us through the poster. Comedy could be in this, because there is a little boy who is so much younger than the other characters, is in the middle of the poster. He may be the main character, but it could be used for comedy elements, especially when people see it for the first time and don't really understand that he important to the story.
Violence and crime are probably key aspects of the film, because the poster is nitty gritty, using low saturated colours in comparison to Sightseers, and although there are no weapons, blood or any connotations of these evident, we know that crime often happens on flat blocks and it seems like the type of film to involve violence and working class problems as it's main plot. I thought it may also be a thriller because it uses dark colours, such as blues and blacks, which are often used in posters for thrillers, and although the main conventions are not evident, the colours and stand out to me as a thriller.

Audience
The audience for this film is probably males, from about age 18-60 in the , because the certificate is 18, although I think many people have watched it before they have turned 18. I would argue that men over 60 are probably not interested in watching many films, and probably not watch a crime drama which looks violent like this.
In gender terms, I think males would only be attracted to this type of film, just because the cast is mainly male and the themes and issues that are tackled in the film are predominately male. This doesn't mean that women don't watch it, as there are some females in the cast, which shows that females can be interested as well and will be drawn to watch it by the characters shown in the poster.
The lower classes, e.g under class and working class are probably the main target audience, as its not a Hollywood High Concept film, and it tackles day to day issues that are found in places like the middle class areas of London, where the film was made. The target audience for the film would want to see things that they can relate to, so I would argue that they are the main audience for this film.

Film Language
The mise en scene of the film poster, especially the setting creates a working class scene in which we get the idea of poverty and people struggling. The back drop behind the main characters aren't the main focus, but we notice them and make a decision about what the film is going to be like from the setting. The colours in the poster are all dark and dingy, which makes us relate to their feelings and the real side of England. The characters are all in long shot, so we see their full outfit, while still seeing that they don't look happy, which maybe shows their attitude to where they live, and the real representation of England. The body language of the characters, with their arms crossed and on their heads, leaning against an ugly fence, reinforces the fact that they aren't happy where they are, and that they are the youth of England.

Poster Analysis- Sam

Ill Manors

Ill Manors is a British Independent film written and directed by Ben Drew (famous musician 'Plan B').

  • The image included on the movie poster is some what 'raw' and 'rough' looking, this indicates what the film is going to be about, and educates the audience of what kind of genre it'll be allowing the film to bring in the right audience.
  • The tagline 'we are all products of our environment... just some environments are harder to survive in' furthermore indicates that this film could be quite violent. In addition it is backed up by one of the reviews on the  poster using the word 'bullet', the choice of words is very much so relevant to the image on the poster and educates the audience of what to expect before watching the film.
  • The film poster has both 'PLAN B' and 'A BEN DREW FILM' presented on the poster who are both the same person however, using his well-known band name Plan B on the poster may be done to increase popularity of the film as he is using his musical fan base to generate a bigger audience.
  • Having all of the positive reviews on the poster in crystal clear capitals allows the audience to read these full of praise reviews, resulting in them being left impressed; leaving them wanting to watch the film.
  • Having the name of the film in such a visible location is done due to the film producers/distributors wanting the audience to be able to see clearly what the name of the film is if they are intrigued and want to watch it. However having it in such a bold character may suggest that the film may not be as popular as other films for example, in an extreme case such a Avatar which had hundreds of millions of pounds in advertisement. it had such a small title due to them not needing to publicize the name of the much anticipated film as they had a bigger budget.

Genre

  • The films genre for this British film is thriller/crime. This is suggested through the posters gloomy and dull color combinations of grey and a yellow/green tint.
  • There is an empty and dark space behind the character in the poster which looks exceptionally empty and eerie, but made to look intimidating by the primary dominance of the darkened colors which makes the audience think what lays ahead for this character?
  • The rough outlook of the stereotypical 'council estate flats' in the sides of the posters marks the film to maybe be in a somewhat poor location, as well as confirming it for the audience.
  • The man holding the gun suggests the fact that the film is going to be violent and include 'crime' in one way or another, not to mention the fact that he is dressed up in stereotypical dark clothes for these kind of events, (also backed up by one of the reviews saying 'bullet paced and unforgettable').

Representation

  • In concept with representation a lot has been given away about one of the presumably main characters of the movie, suggesting the fact that he commits crime. This is all carried out through mise en scene with the lighting being darkened near the character, and a gloomy and miserable sky's above possibly suggesting the fact that it's gloom/daunting times all round for everybody in this film?
  •  Predominantly the main factor is the fact that he is holding a dangerous prop in form of a weapon, the gun. The gun suggests the fact that there will be shootings/crime committed in this film.
  • This is furthermore backed up by the fact that the character is wearing dark clothing which is usually used on characters who aren't up to any good, which suggests that he will also be committing crime in the film.

Audience

  • In terms of audience and who it is targeted for, this film could have a wide range of targets.
  • In first terms the films emphasizes the fact that the film is written and directed by that of Plan B (Ben Drew). In doing this it suggests the fact that they are trying to boots the popularity of the film by bringing up some of his loyal fans over from music into cinema, they're making them spend their leisure pound on the cinema rather than his music on this occasion.
  • For a wider yet more accurate viewpoint of who the target audience for this film would be for, it is clear to see that it is dominantly aiming to bring in fans of crime movies. Having such a wide and open portrayal of the character on the poster holding a gun in what looks like a 'run down' and 'rough' location; it ticks all the boxes of a stereotypical genre codes associated with crime.
  • As for age the movie is clearly aimed at an older audience maybe younger adults/older teens due to the fact that the film is certificated at an 18. Having to make the film and 18 cements the fact that the film will contain violence, and backs up the point that is would be enjoyed by those who are fans of the genre 'crime'.
  • If this film were to be non-violent at rated at an PG for example then the colors on the poster suggests a lot about the audience. The colors on the poster are very dark/gloomy and daunting. Where as if they were to be bright and happy such as yellow and a shot of a blue sky then the film would be given off a different impression, therefore the colors used make it point towards an older audience.

Media Language

  • The characters positioning in the frame and use of a medium-long shot is key in the poster, it allows the audience to see the element of unknown laying behind him and see how empty the shot is. This also educates the audience in where the film will be set.
  • The dark colors used in the photo suggests the fact that the film is going to have a 'darkened' atmosphere and will be criminal related.

Tower Block

Tower block is a British thriller film directed by both James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson, and written by James Morgan.

  • Image used in the movie poster is clever in the way in which it blends in with the title 'tower block' in the style of an actual tower block. Having this as both the image and the name of the film suggests the fact that the 'tower block' is an extremely important factor in the film
  • The tagline used 'no-one gets out alive' immediately suggests the fact that nobody will be getting out of the tower block alive. Having both of these on screen allows the audience to put points together and give a rough underlining of what the film is about, and wanting to know more... why does nobody get out alive, how did they get in that position in the first place? Not to mention the fact the font color is red which means that their is danger as red, is commonly known to be the color of danger.
  • Having the actors/actresses names clearly visible in large characters on the poster clearly suggests that they are either up and coming or popular actors, this also suggests the fact that they may be trying to tempt fans of individual actors/actresses in to watching this film as they may have liked them in previous films. However in contrast the directors name is not advertised as much; this suggests that he isn't as well known possibly trying to prevent 'putting off'' potential naive audiences who are judgmental of non-established directors.
  • Once again the title of the film is the dominant figure of the poster in line with the image of tower block. This could be due to them trying to emphasize the importance of the tower block in the film as well as them informing the audience of the films name so that if audiences are interested, then they are fully informed of what the film is and what the film would be set on.

Genre

  • The films genre is thriller, which is implemented and suggested in many ways on the poster, such as...
  • In classic thrillers there is always the element of unknown, and with this posters design it leaves the audience asking many questions: Why's the tower so important, whats going to happen in the tower?
  • The tagline 'no-one gets out alive' confirms the fact that there should be death in this film like the case with many thrillers and sticking to generic codes, as well as leaving the audience wanting to know if anybody beats the odds and gets out the tower block... alive.
  • The people on top of the tower block are overshadowed by an intimidating dangerous red. This red color confirms the fact that these people are in danger and leaving the audience wanting to know why.
  • The tagline highlights the key events and focus of the film, and like with most thrillers it will be around that of death.

Representation

  • Not a lot has been given away in terms of representation and any of the main characters involved in the film, as there isn't a clear character from the film shown on the poster.
  • However the shades people on top of the building on the character appears to be an outline of a male. This man is standing with a strong and confident posture which could mean that their could be a strong male character in this film.
  • Having no character on screen makes it hard to interpret any ideas of characters as it would be made easier by costume/hair and makeup (Mise en scene) .
  • However the main point of the poster being a tower block, it indicates that this will be the location and play an important role in the film. Tower blocks can be seen to be fairly working class conditions, therefore the people represented in this film could be working class people.

Audience

  • On the poster the name of the actors/actresses in the film are clearly presented along the top line of the poster. This could have been done due to them being popular and trying to lure fans of specific actors to watch this film as they are starring in it.
  • The genre of this film is outright thriller therefore meaning that this film would obviously be one for thriller fans. The typical mystery and questions left by thrillers is what makes a thriller, a thriller in my opinion... and in this case its no different! The poster gives nothing away and leaves the audience wanting to watch the film and find out more for example, will anybody beat the odds and get out alive?
  • Age wise, the movie is certificated at a 15. Having the movie at this certification concludes the fact that this movie wouldn't really suit a younger audience due to the presumption of there being violent/killing scenes.
  • As for a more specific audience I feel this is aimed at for older teens/adults. The main/key characters used in the film are in general at an average of 30 years or older; this could suggest that the director wants adults to be able to relate to the characters due to them possibly sharing the some similar characteristics, but this could be sparked off by their age relation.

Media Language

  • The extreme long shot of the tower block in the poster could suggest that the location is fairly isolated  and there isn't really an escape?
  • I feel the technique of pathetic fallacy has also been used on the poster. For example, the stormy weather surrounding the building could mean sorrow/bad times ahead as rain has been widely known to represent saddened moods. I feel this because if I were to picture the weather around the tower block to be that of sunny it wouldn't have the same negative mood surrounding it.
  • In terms of the lighting around the poster it is that of a somewhat neon blue, the same color of police/ambulance sirens! This could indicate the fact they are both needed in the film, which must mean crime/violence... it's a sub-consciously links the two.

  • The poster has a slogan underneath the Main Title "A NEW WORLD OF SOUND AWAITS YOU", this connotes an idea that the film is about 'Sound', there is a change of events and something bad happens to do with a new sound? This slogan is really indirect and a great device as it makes the audience question it.
  • "A FILM BY PETER STRICKLAND" is displayed above the title to notify an Peter Strickland fans that this is his film. A device used to advertise the film through his fan-base.
  • On the right of the poster is the festivals that it as selected for in terms of film 2012, this is done in white on black to to help it stand out.
  • The actors names appear on the poster, the majority of which are in the credit block, however the main character "Toby Jones" is places just above this is a larger font.
  • At the bottom is the films social pages as well as the films website, followed by the films distribution company 'Artificial Eye'.
  • The title is obviously the largest text on the page in order for this to be the first thing that the audience reads when they first look at it, the font for this title is slightly slanted, connoting that this film is a 'crooked' journey.

Genre

  • The Genre for this particular British Independent film is Horror, this is portrayed through the poster by the colours, black and red are typically used to create a dark eerie visual look as well as implementing fear, the dark background which shadows around the characters on the poster could connote a dark theme for the film. Also the imagery is used in a very symbolic way, the closeup of a very serious man is almost without emotions as if he is portrayed to be a cold hearted man and appears to be splitting in half with of what it seems to be a females head who is looking very worried almost to indicate something dangerous and fearful has happened to hear. "Nightmarish" as quoted from the review from the Empire magazine review in the top right of the newspaper which shows that this film is what you would imagine in your nightmares.

Representation

  • In terms of representation i believe they have left a lot to the imagination as the images are closeup of the characters, as a result this does not give away much Mis en scene of which i would usually use to connote an idea. However from what is being displayed on the poster it seems that the man represents a more upper class background as he seems to have a suit, white shirt and tie maybe indicating he has a higher power job.
  • Being a horror and the male character being the main, it is quite easy to form the conception that the male character or character's dominate the film in terms of gender.

Audience

  • Overall the main audience that this film is aimed at are fans of horror movies, I would say a more mature audience type due to the review type at the top of the poster, one from the Empire Magazine & one from the Telegraph newspaper. Both these newspaper and magazine are more aimed at knowledge and they go more in depth into the news story's, as a result meaning more well educated upper class citizens is the target audience.

Media Language

  • The use of lighting in this poster produces a very dark, dramatic atmosphere towards the film. The black background provides an element of unknown, this mixed with the shadowing on the male characters head connotes an illusion that he is fading into the darkness or he is a dark, mysterious man who is hiding something.
  • Facial expression plays a vital part in this poster, the contrast of his very serious face with the very terrified look on the females breaking through creates mixed emotions. Almost indicating that these to have some sort of meeting point or relationship in the movie, the female probably being the victim.

Cleanskin

Cleanskin is a British Thriller set in London about a secret service agent who has been assigned a task to eliminate a british born terrorist. (2012)
I have picked this film because like our short film we are producing, it is a thriller, so it would be good to analyse the techniques used.

  • The poster has a tagline "FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE" this is in red font to indicate danger and violence, in terms of meaning it provides an understanding that in order to fight against something you must fight it with the same thing, in this instance murder.
  • A release date has been included to provide the date it is out at the cinema, you will find a lot of posters do not have the exact date if they are really big mainstream films because they have to be released at different time worldwide, however in this circumstance this is a british film so this is the time it came out in the UK. The font is red also to stand out and to match the colour scheme.
  • "Sean Bean" the main actors name who is displayed on the poster is in relatively large font just below the shoulder causing an almost white on black appearance to stand out, this shows people who do not know who he is an indication that's him. As for the other actors, they are positioned in the content block at the bottom along with the production company, distribution company and all the main people who were involved in the film.
  • Just below the big caption of "Sean Bean" is a title saying "A film by Hadi Hajaig" which is reaching out to any audience who are fans of some of his work in the past who may be interested in seeing some more material from this director.
  • Along the bottom of the poster there is a Facebook name for anyone who wants to like the page on there (a device used to spread the word) along with the Warner Bros. Production company logo in the corner.
  • The main images works really well with the background, the imagery blended into the mans torso could indicate that this crime which is going on is 'burning him inside' (explosion/destruction and murder) which is merged with a dark jacket, this then contrasts to a very bright almost cloudy background meaning that there is a brighter future ahead,
  • All the text is perfectly in line which makes the poster look very formal and professional, the text is very direct and in a centre alignment.

Genre

  • The Genre for this film is thriller, this is determined through colouring, imagery and text. The colouring consists mainly of whites, black and reds indicating that all though there is normality, along the way there is violent events. The Main image is a seriously expressed man on his own with a gun in his hand, again linking with the genre of a thriller, an event is occurring within the blended imagery of the mans torso showing an exciting event of which seems to be an act of murder. The slogan "FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE" expresses a vey action orientated film almost indicating a missionary based theme.

Representation

  • From this poster i can see that this film is representing an upper class secret agent through the use of props (gun) and the costuming (leather gloves, smart black trousers, expensive jacket & scarf) also representing city London through the use of the stereotypical buildings we as the audience generally associate with London on the poster.

Audience

  • From this poster you can determine that this film is aimed at the more male adult market, you can derive this from the poster as it is clear it had a lot of violence in it (man shooting another in the image) which would not be suitable for the younger generation as well as a more complex crime/thriller storyline through the formal layout and the imagery used. Furthermore is also has an audience for any fans of the crime/thriller genre, the director and/or the main actor Sean bean.

Media Language

  • Using a long shot for the main image of Sean Bean gives us a full frontal view of the kind of character he is (agent), displays him as the main character, shows he is going after someone or something. It also leave much to the imagination as we don't know if he is playing the good or the bad guy.
  • The prop in this post being the gun plays a vital part in this poster, this provide the audience with the information that he is involved in some sort of crime, he looks like he can use it, it seems to be silenced which means he is going to kill someone but doesn't want to get caught?
  • In terms of clothing he seems very well dressed, formal yet intimidating. In all black to conclude he may be on a dark journey or he does his business in the dark so he may not want to be seen.
  • The characters body language is very calm, he is comfortable with the gun in his hand, almost as if he has done it before. In terms of facial expression he seems very calm also, slightly serious and determined to finish business.

Meeting editing deadline - Curtis and Meg

As a group we had trouble meeting the deadline for the editing for our short film, this was due to needing to re-shoot a few shots which we were not happy with i.e :

This is a shot we had to re shoot as our actors trousers were not pulled up properly, at the time we were not aware of this which was a frustrating moment.

Another reason why we did not meet the editing deadline was because we needed to change all the shots colouring so it looks like it was in the evening rather than the daytime. Obviously this would take a while due to getting the contrast of the evening effect correctly to ensure it actually looks like it occurred in evening for every clip using Final Cut Pro.

Making the Titles - Meg

we want the perfect title for our piece, so i have been trying to use different effects on final cut pro to make the title for our piece. we need at least three titles for our piece, the title and the characters names, so they all need to be the same and very good. i have tried out many different fonts, and decided on one, and now i'm trying to make the title move from one side to the other, while blurring in the middle.

i also tried to make the title have different effects, such as blurring it halfway through and changing the speed. i used an effect called blur distort and although i liked it, i didnt think it was as good as my original try (first picture)

Proof Of Editing - Dani

To find our sound we have been looking at websites which are copyright free or royalty free. I found the most useful has been FreeSound which has collaborative database of Creative Commons Licensed sounds.

We are looking for suspense music as it cuts between the female and male character as the audience is unaware that they actually know each other and that there heading to the same place.

In the end we used our sound from the website called incompetech and downloaded the music called conspiracy part two.

Problems we have come across when filming - Dani

We had to film in a small office and had limited space therefore we had to ensure that we did not get the tripod or camera case in the shots. Also, we had to ensure we did not break the 180degree rule.

( Short Film to Show)

All of Us - when filming Curtis for the second time in the conservatory we were not excatly sure whether he had his hood up when entering the house so we had to film the shot twice including him taking down the hood. Also, as we were in the conservatory we had to make sure that we did not film ourselves in the background of the windows.

( Show pictures of shots)

When we first got to my house with the equipment the tripod was slightly tilted and appeared to have had a bit snapped of it therefore it was harder for us to get the camera straight. However, we got round this by extending the tripod legs and changing the angle of the camera. We did not have time to return back to the college once we had reached our destenation.
